Creativity is fostered at Yavneh by a spirit of openness and inclusion. Students devote many hours to high level academics, and they also strive to reach their creative potential, often with breathtaking results. The Arts Department at Yavneh offers programs that span visual arts, media, music and performing arts, all of which enhance skills, build self-confidence, and spark new interests outside of the classroom.
The visual arts program at Yavneh is designed to develop students’ creative skills, critical appreciation and knowledge of artistic techniques and technologies through processes of visual inquiry, studio practice, exhibition and display and in evaluations and reflections of their own art works as well as those of others. The visual arts program also aims to develop students’ sense of personal and cultural identity and equips them for lifelong involvement in, and the active appreciation of, the Arts. Studying art at Leibler Yavneh College allows students to learn from a specialist teacher in painting, photography, printmaking, drawing, ceramics and sculpture.
One of the highlights of the school year is the annual College musical. a beloved school tradition for many decades. It is a unique experience bringing together the upper and lower secondary students as Yavneh performers in Years 7-12 eagerly cultivate their talents in acting, singing, dancing, and technical theatre arts, melding the group into more than just a cast. With coaching and live musical accompaniment, plus support from professional directors, choreographers, and musicians, students gain valuable training, honing their performance skills to stage top-quality productions. Each year, students experience the process of building a show, and dazzle their families and friends on our stage. Past favourite musicals have included: Matilda, Joseph, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables.
Filled with a range of exciting performance opportunities, our extra-curricular Bands and Ensembles span both our Primary and Secondary campuses and include the Jazz Band, Primary Choir, Chamber Ensemble, Senior and Junior Hebrew Bands, Senior Stage Band, and the VCE Ensemble. Through this wide array of bands, ensembles, activities and performances, we strive to provide students of all years and skill levels the opportunity to participate and perform.
The Music, Media and Drama Classroom Curriculums from Prep to Year 12 focus on making the arts fun, exciting and relevant for all students. The Music program starts in Primary School, with music lessons available as a part of the standard curriculum and additional tuition available to families who choose these sessions. Instruments available include guitar, piano, bass guitar, drums, saxophone, flute and clarinet, with violin, voice and trumpet. Expert tutors are sourced to run these sessions which are affordably priced. A highlight is our wonderful Year 8 Instrument Program where students are assigned an instrument (saxophone, guitar, trumpet, violin) and receive expert group tuition once a week from our Instrumental Music staff. The study of Media and Multimedia Arts involves creating representations of the world and telling stories through communications technologies such as television, film, video, newspapers, radio, video games, the internet and mobile media. Media Studies connects audiences, purposes and ideas, exploring concepts and viewpoints through the creative use of materials and technologies. Our Drama curriculum excites the imagination and encourages students to reach their creative and expressive potential. Drama enables students to imagine, participate in and explore real and imagined worlds, individually and collaboratively by using their body, gestures, movements, voice and language. The Visual Arts is a dynamic hub with a collaborative approach to learning and sharing technology and resources. A visual feast of colour, creativity and innovation, our stimulating environment enables students to share, cultivate and convey ideas with others. We continue to offer all the arts subjects at VCE level including Artmaking and Exhibiting, Media, and Drama to our Year 11 and 12 students.
It is our belief that music brings us together as a community and this is especially true at Yavneh. When we sing or perform together it brings us closer to each other and it strengthens our identity. In addition, our music and visual arts program allows students to express themselves as individuals in a creative and nonjudgmental environment. It is our goal to create a welcoming and inclusive environment in music class.
