Exam Preparation & Emotional Well-Being by Eliza Wade – School Counsellor

As we approach the upcoming exam season and the culmination of the school year, I want to acknowledge our students who are about to embark on this challenging period. Navigating exams can be a daunting task, and the end-of-year workload often adds an extra layer of stress. However, with the strength of your community and a focus on well-being, we can approach this time with resilience and unity.

While the pursuit of academic excellence is important, I want to stress the significance of prioritizing emotional well-being during this period. The stress and pressure that often accompany exams can impact not only academic performance but also overall mental health. Therefore, it’s crucial that we approach this time with a mindful focus on support, understanding, and self-care.

I strongly advocate for the integration of emotional well-being techniques to effectively manage stress and cultivate a positive mindset. In particular, mindfulness practices prove beneficial; I encourage students to incorporate simple activities like deep breathing or brief mindful breaks into their daily routines, which can significantly centre the mind and alleviate anxiety. Additionally, promoting positive self-talk is crucial. Students should be reminded of their inherent capabilities and strengths, actively replacing self-doubt with affirmations that foster confidence and self-assurance. Furthermore, the establishment of realistic goals is paramount. Emphasizing the importance of setting achievable objectives and breaking down study sessions into manageable tasks serves to make the academic workload more digestible and less overwhelming for students.

Parents and guardians, your role in providing support during this time is invaluable, and there are specific ways in which you can contribute to your child’s well-being. Firstly, create a supportive home environment by ensuring that it is conducive to focused study. Offer a quiet and organized space for studying, free from unnecessary distractions. Additionally, encourage healthy habits by promoting proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular exercise, as a healthy lifestyle significantly contributes to both cognitive function and emotional well-being. Lastly, celebrate your child’s efforts, regardless of the outcome. Providing positive reinforcement fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivation, nurturing a positive mindset during this demanding period.

In acknowledging the current events in Israel, our priorities and purpose may feel somewhat confused. However, let us recognize the unique and incredible opportunity we have here at Yavneh—an opportunity for education in a safe and nurturing environment. The strength of our community is a beacon of light, and through education, we empower our students to contribute positively to the world.

New beginnings, as we all know, can be accompanied by a mix of excitement and trepidation, but the warmth and openness of the Yavneh community have made this transition a positive experience. Thank you for embracing me so warmly.
