With A Heavy Heart by Daniel Fuchs – 2019 Yavneh Graduate

Dear Yavneh Family,

I write this message with a heavy heart, filled with grief and sorrow, in memory of my dear Officer, Roi Chapel who was tragically killed defending our homeland on October 10, 2023. More than just an officer, Roi taught me what it means to be a mensch, leading by example, a true role model. I count myself blessed to not only have him as officer but as of a cherished friend, he was exactly this to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Roi always went above and beyond to remind us that we are humans before soldiers, relating to us on a personal level and constantly caring about our wellbeing. Not only did he shine with care, but exemplified dedication to our beloved country and a profound love for the Jewish people. He has taught me so much, and I will continue to admire him forever. BD”E, Roi Chapel.

The recent terror attacks in Israel carried out have undoubtedly weighed heavily on all of us. As Jews, it is our duty to bear the pain of our brothers and sisters in Israel. In times of crisis and conflict, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated, as I do now. Simchat Torah, a time that should be filled with joy and magic, was instead turned into arguably the greatest tragedy in Israeli history.

However, it is of utmost importance that we hold onto the strength and resilience that define Am Yisrael to guide us through this nightmare. Throughout our history, we have faced adversity, hardship, and unrelenting hatred. Time and again, we, the Jewish people, have emerged from these challenges stronger and more united. I firmly believe that this time will be no different. Having served in combat myself, I understand firsthand the significance of words of inspiration and motivation. They serve as a light of hope, propelling our brave soldiers towards victory. Positivity has been and will be our key to survival.

I have witnessed, through the expressions and actions of the Yavneh community, unwavering dedication support, unity and compassion for our Jewish State. It fills me with immense pride to be a part of our Yavneh family. It is precisely these values that we must hold on to during these tough times. We must come together as a community, extending our hands and shoulders to provide support and comfort to one another. We must remember that we are not alone in our struggles and that there are many who stand us.

To our courageous soldiers, especially those who once walked the halls of Yavneh, we say thank you with the utmost respect and gratitude. You are putting your lives on the line to protect our homeland, and we pray excitedly for your swift and safe return. Please remember that Am Yisrael and Hashem are always with you, guiding and protecting you on this challenging journey.

May we soon see a brighter, more peaceful future for our beloved Israel.
